If you’re not familiar with The Big Bang Theory, I’m sorry to inform you that you’ve been missing out. It was subtle at first, but over time I came to realize that this popular sit-com was teaching me a thing or two about the harsh realities of dating.
Dating 101 – As Taught By The Big Bang Theory
Leonard had a crush on Penny for years before he worked up the nerve to ask her out on a date. Even then, they were on-again/off-again until they finally settled into a comfortable relationship. Be patient, start slow, begin as friends and let things grow in their natural direction. Relationships aren’t races, there’s no prize for fastest dash.
Leonard and Howard had a friendly pact, were it not for that pact then Howard probably never would have been set up with Penny’s friend, Bernadette. Your friends know you better than anyone, tap your social network to sample some dating delights. Never know what might crop up in your extended circle of friends.
Raj and Howard thought Sheldon would never find a love match, until they created an online dating profile for him and set him up with Amy. If bars, libraries, farmer’s markets, coffee houses, and other social hot spots aren’t your cup of tea try screening potential companions at an online dating site.
Howard and Bernadette, Sheldon and Amy, Leonard and Penny, even Raj and his beloved pooch Cinnamon, each and every one of these characters are unapologetic about their quirks. They accept each other as unique individuals, and enjoy fantastic relationships as a result. Be confident in your own skin, if you enjoy your own company others will too.
Sheldon might try to control every aspect of his life right down to detailed relationship agreements for both his roommate and his girlfriend, but even he is open to a mature conversation once in a while. No matter how rigid your expectations, be open to discussion and even try inching out of your comfort zone once in a while. Never know what sort of treasures you can find when you allow yourself a little adventure.
No Doctorate Needed
Penny might be the odd girl out with her lack of advanced degree, but that doesn’t stop her from fitting right in with a group of awkward intellectuals. Just going to prove that you should bloom where you’re planted.
Funny thing, this is just what I happened to learn from The Big Bang Theory.
Imagine the kind of list I could come up with from True Blood, or Lost Girl! I want to hear from you, though, what valuable relationship and dating advice have you learned from a popular television series?
